The world inside a grain of rice

A flavourful approach to bad experiences

Remember to raise your eyebrows occasionally and practice every facial expression you can make.

I’m sure almost everyone expresses that uncomfortable feeling whenever the food has a flavor that shouldn’t be there.

The go-to reaction is to, more or less, contract our facial muscles to display an honest reaction. Of course, while considering if our reaction would impact the ones who prepared it.

But this Wednesday afternoon would be a great occasion to remember such a moment.

The sudden disappointment created by a small expectation that the dish we once had in front of us would’ve been good enough. And to create a better context, let’s consider the relationship between that moment and our biggest achievements since that happened.

Quite a foolish thought you might think, and you’re probably right.

Because, hopefully, none of us had stormed out the door once we discovered that a single dish provoked such a big discomfort, and for that reason, someone should’ve felt the consequences of our undeveloped anger management skills.

No big life decisions were made immediately after experiencing such a tragic little moment.

History was, as far as I’m aware, not decided after consuming the worst food possible. It is most likely that every leader from our textbooks had decent food to consume.

That inconvenient moment was real. Yet we still made it so far, regardless of such an experience.

And one great to visualize such an occurrence in your life is by considering it a single grain of rice that makes up your whole human experience.

A complete dish that takes many years to even sketch an idea of what it could possibly turn into.

Sometimes each grain of rice takes a little more to be done, and some other times you’re wondering why it has to be one of the thousands of little grains of rice if it turns out to be so flawed.

Nonetheless, once we see the bigger picture, we can start learning what’s worth holding on to.

And if there are so many experiences we will add to our lives in the future, then it makes more sense to consider how the future ones will contribute to our development rather than how the past ones sometimes disappointed us.

It is a miracle every time we get to experience something that goes off the path we once imagined taking, because this way we can constantly reimagine a better future.
