Learning to live for something

The environment is speaking to us in metaphors we rarely understand.

We’re searching for signs yet our skin gets a little more burned every time we go out and the sky is clear of clouds. The world is changing.

But we are the world we live in.

Walking with your bare feet on the hot sand heating up since sunrise is as difficult as it is to breathe the hot air when walking down the crowded places of the busiest boulevards in your city. But instead of sitting with that discomfort, you keep walking to reach your destination.

And it’s not always the destination that keeps you going, but the dread of staying in a place that’s not meant for enjoying because it’s a transit-only space. You’re not supposed to stop there.

And you can feel it around you when everyone bumps into you for walking too slow.

So instead of getting overwhelmed by that space where we have to keep walking, we come up with distractions. Music in your headphones, something to listen to, a phone call to hang on to, a small object in your hands to keep your mind away from not cursing everything and everyone around you. We’ve all been there.

I call this “escaping the regular and bouncing off your own downfall”.

Using the tools you have in the most effective way, because why wouldn’t you?

To be in the process of getting where you want to be always feels like a new beginning, even if you’ve traveled the same distance over and over again.

But in my experience, everything is a choice. Some days will prove to be less worthy of your energy than others.

And in that scenario, whether you’re waiting for something external to interfere with your commute or you want to make it yourself more enjoyable, you’re choosing something. To a little more patience or take the experience into your hands and do your best to improve it.

It’s not about the outcome, but what choice is the most useful/rewarding/safe for you.

And the way to assert value in life is not by counting outcomes but by compounding the experiences and our decisions that lead us toward them.

Whenever an artist chooses to work on a better artwork, something unseen by all of humanity, he’s not committing himself to the deadline or outcome of the creative process.

He’s leaning into the unknown of the many decisions he had yet to make for that artwork to come to life.

And whether you look at your life as an artwork that’s being created, a film that’s being recorded, or a book that is written every day page by page, you’re engaging in the most complex yet beautiful way of living.

Creating the most authentic story. Your life’s story.
