Expect to have expectations

The only unfamiliar aspect of our most beloved comfort drink — for most of us, the privileged not exploited by capitalism — is the temperature of the first taste of a freshly poured cup of coffee. Or tea, we don’t discriminate here.

And you have most definitely experienced this.

Burning your tongue again and again because your brain had yet to understand the minimum time necessary for the hot drink to be drunk safely. It’s funny how those moments were so driven by the reward and much less than the fear of getting hurt.

But such timing precision is a common thing to expect from ourselves.

Perhaps you have noticed yourself at some point when you were holding yourself to unrealistic expectations and standards for some reason that is much deeper than it appears.

We live every day with them as if our lives depended on their accuracy of prediction.

We give a try to “leverage” them into better outcomes only to be left even more hopeless and disappointed.

You look around you and you can’t see them. Because they only exist in the realm of never-ending narratives and energies we can only access by inner work through the depths of our understandings.

EXPECTATIONS!
(You definitely didn’t expect this)

Deciding what it is that we should expect from ourselves from the moment we gain consciousness to the point we lose it is a difficult task to achieve.

Because one of the most honest fears we could admit to facing is the fear of not living life like it was pure destiny.

And not a simple destiny that is easily readable through the active act of connecting things by looking backward. But one that is, for the most part, determined by our actions and inactions.

Take a step back and rewind the last couple of times sadness and disappointment were much more of a “problem” not because of the real outcome, but because of the poor ability to predict and prevent.

If you can predict a bad situation, it’s more likely that you’re going to take a few safe measurements before making a decision. Or not, if you’re a bit of a daredevil.

And as much as we are looking forward to being safe and having a successful career, the ever-romanticizing and hyper-optimism is stripping away some very distressful facts from reality.

Hurdles we have to face, and struggles we can embrace.

A new pair of glasses, you can consider.

Glasses that can only be worn inside your mind, and are only altering the attachment to every outcome of any situation you’re more or less in control of.

Blue pill, red pill, whatever comes to your mind.

You have the capacity to take both of them, whether you do it through mindfulness, meditation, journaling, and many other ways to be more aware of your thought processes.

But as soon as you see a car struggling to get out of a parking lot, make sure to stick to your planned route. And if there’s a way to go around it, only by trying you can discover new and better paths to fulfillment.

We don’t need to question our ability to face any face of uncertainty.
Even in the face of adversity, we have our minds, experiences, and pure intentions to rely on.
